First WVDE Visit to BEST
Vickie Mohnacky visited Beckley-Stratton Middle School today and was able to see students using the Netbooks. We've been working on a Personal Brochure based on students' reflections on their own lives. Their brochures are being created using MS Publisher which, when completed, will be printed out on a color printer. Students save their work on a server using ftp as well as in a folder on their assigned Netbook. Saving on an ftp server, which I manage, allows me to electronically evaluate and provide feedback to the students.

Up and Running
We are up and running with our netbooks. The kids are excited that they are assigned their own book when they come to Gifted. We have a few glitches. There is some inconsistancty in running some on line programs that require Java. About 25% are running fine.
This past week we downloaded some photo editing software. GIMP 2 and Kai's Super Goo. These programs have been running with little complications.

Getting Started
Well, the "people" from the county have come to install Deepfreeze and everything is hooked up and ready to use. We should be able to get started on our project by next week. We are consumed with the Social Studies fair this week.

Netbook Training
Yeaaaaa I just discovered that I do have my router! Vickie Mohnacky is here doing my training. We have been discussing "security." Our county is BIG on DeepFreeze. I am concerned that if I hook up my little lab using their network that they will get fussy if I don't have DeepFreeze on the computers.....what do you all think?

Update us, please.
Please update us on your netbooks. Putnam County Middle School Gifted Program, Beckley-Stratton Middle School, Ripley Elementary, Tomahawk Intermediate and Huntington Middle School have the cart, 15 netbooks, and the connector, antennae, etc. Fairplains Elementary TREK and Cross Lanes Elementary also have the cart, netbooks, and connector, etc., now.
You probably know by now that the carts do lock and will probably not go far as they are very heavy.

Got my netbooks!
I am so excited! All my netbooks are unpacked and charging in my portable lab cart. The computer lady at my school put in a work order to have the appropriate measures taken to allow them to be used in the school system with deep freeze, etc...
